Update on Springfield Main Street Fire – Victims Identified

Springfield, Ore. – This investigation is continuing. At this this point, investigators do not believe the fire was intentionally set. Detectives, with assistance from the Lane County Medical Examiner’s office, have made positive identification of the decedents and next of kin have been notified.

****ORIGINAL REPORT****

 

At approximately 4:17am on April 8th, 2022, Central Lane 911 received a call from an area resident reporting a structure fire at a commercial property in the 2000 block of Main Street. Officers with the Springfield Police Department were dispatched to the scene to assist the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department. After an extensive effort to contain the fire, Firefighters extinguished the fire within a couple of hours.

Detectives with the Springfield Police Department are working with investigators with the Eugene-Springfield Fire Marshal’s office to determine the cause of the fire. Detectives are also working with investigators with the ATF.

 

During the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire, Detectives have located the bodies of an adult male and an adult female inside building. Detectives have yet to make a positive identification of either person. The cause of death will be determined by the Lane County Medical Examiner’s office as part of their investigation. Preliminary information yielded from the investigation indicates both subjects had been staying/sleeping inside the vacant building. The Springfield Police Department investigation continues with the assistance of the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department and fire investigators with the ATF.
