SPRINGFIELD, OR. – Springfield Police Department Officers responded this afternoon to reports of a ‘subject armed with a gun’ in the area of Maple Elementary School. Upon arrival, officers contacted a juvenile in the area that matched previous reports. The juvenile was not in possession of any firearms.
This juvenile was not a student at the school, and it is believed the witnesses mistook a knife sheath for a holster. Officers were able to take the juvenile safely and quickly into custody without incident There is no ongoing threat in the area.

Officers remained on-scene to assist school staff in coordinating parent pick-up of the students.
