Salem Ore. – On April 27, 2022 at approximately 1:30 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers from Salem Area Command were advised of a reckless driver eastbound on Highway 22 near milepost 23.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office had attempted to stop the red Lincoln MKZ on Interstate 5, but the vehicle fled, and a pursuit ensued. Marion County Deputies eventually discontinued the pursuit as the vehicle continued to drive recklessly, passing vehicles on the shoulder and traveling at a high rate of speed.
OSP Troopers then located the vehicle near Detroit as it continued to drive in a reckless manner. All four tires were deflated after Stop Sticks were deployed in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver continued to elude the police. As the vehicle continued eastbound near milepost 90 on rims towards the city of Sisters, OSP Troopers performed a pursuit-halting technique, and the pursuit was ended. The driver, identified as Joshua Hayworth, 45, from Salem, was contacted outside of his vehicle and was uncooperative. A Taser was deployed, and Troopers were able to take Hayworth into custody. Hayworth was transported to an area hospital on a Police Officer’s Mental Hold.
OSP was assisted by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Black Butte Police Department, Oregon Department of Transportation, and Sisters Fire Department.
