Eugene, Ore. – At 2:05 p.m., Eugene Police were called to the 3300 block of Paula Court for a dispute between family members. A male, later identified as COREY STEVEN LISTER, age 27, had been in a verbal dispute and then left in his vehicle. He returned at different times with officers responding back multiple times.
Lister was reported to be making suicidal statements. Lister left the area again. Multiple units searched for him, but did not locate him. At 3:13 p.m., Lister returned to the Paula Court residence in his vehicle, was yelling at one of the residents, and police were called back to the scene. One of the family members was trying to block Lister with another vehicle in the cul-de-sac.
When contacted by police officers, Lister challenged them to shoot him. Eugene Springfield Fire EMS was called to be nearby for any contingencies. There were attempts to de-escalate with Crisis Negotiation Team, but Lister was unable to be contacted as he did not have a phone. A PA was used and then ultimately, the Eugene Police Drone Team was deployed to use the drone to speak with Lister and help negotiate the situation into a safer status. Lister had a yellow device in the passenger seat, with a handle that looked like a firearm handle, he also had a wrench in his hand. Police were advised Lister may have something in his waistband. At 3:30 p.m., a CENS message was sent out to the nearby residences to shelter in place and stay away from windows due to the possibility of weapons. Police were subsequently able to determine the item with the handle was a lighter.
Lister was barricaded in his vehicle and then later backed down the roadway in reverse. Some residents were coming outside the home, and officers advised them to get inside to keep the situation calm and everyone in a safer position. Between a vehicle PA system and one from an EPD drone, communications were established with a crisis negotiator. There was a productive negotiation and good two-way communication. A plan was developed with Lister and he followed directions. During this, officers were able to determine the waistband bulge was bunched up material and there was no firearm. Lister was taken into custody safely with no injuries at 4:39 p.m.
