Eugene, Ore. – At 7:58 p.m. on January 20, a caller reported an unknown man trying to come onto property near Dani Street and Janisse Street. The caller reported the man had a handgun in one hand and a stick in another. The man, later identified as Dustin Kyle Staton, age 40, was subsequently reported to be walking eastbound on W. 13th Avenue toward Bailey Hill, and reported to have shot the gun. No injuries were reported.
An officer arrived in the area and spotted Staton and gave him commands at 13th Avenue and Logan at 8:03 p.m. DUSTIN STATON refused to listen to commands and took his shirt off. Traffic in the area was restricted for safety and an AlertSense message was sent to residents in the area from 911 to stay inside. Staton ultimately agreed to walk to a patrol vehicle, but continued to ignore commands. Another officer negotiated with Staton several minutes and then ultimately Staton was taken into custody with help of a taser. Per policy,
Eugene Police called medics to evaluate Staton after the taser deployment, then he was transported to Lane County Jail on a charge of Resisting Arrest and a warrant out of Lincoln City. During officers’ investigation, it was discovered Staton had likely used the stick to hit a sign, making a loud noise, instead of shooting a gun. Case 22-01187 (information directly from EPD)
