Armed, Barricaded Man Safely Taken into Custody

Eugene, Ore. – At 11:57 a.m. on June 23, Eugene Police received a call regarding two people who were refusing to leave a residence at Village Oaks Apartments, 3610 W. 18th Avenue.

 

One of the individuals, Shane Allen Maass, age 36, of Wentzville, Missouri, was reported to have a firearm and to have threatened the resident. Officers approached the apartment and made contact with Maass, who refused to disarm and challenged officers to shoot him.

While the officers continued to speak with Maass, a sergeant and other officers arrived on scene to coordinate the evacuation of several nearby apartments for safety. A member of the EPD Crisis Negotiation Team and a sergeant with EPD SWAT arrived. The EPD Street Crimes Unit sergeant assisted with the search warrant process. After several hours of negotiations and with warrant signed by a judge in hand, EPD SWAT was able to take Maass safely into custody at around 7:25 p.m. with the aid of a Taser and a K9 Unit.

Maass was medically evaluated on scene by elements of the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department and then cleared and transported to Lane County Jail for being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm and for Menacing. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
